In the realm of epic heroes, two figures stand tall: Achilles, the mighty warrior of Homer's Iliad, and Beowulf, the courageous king from the Old English epic of the same name. Both are paragons of heroism, yet their motivations, actions, and legacies offer strikingly different perspectives on what it means to be a hero. Let's dive in!

Achilles: The Glory-Seeking Warrior

Achilles is the ultimate warrior. His prowess in battle is unmatched, fueled by a relentless pursuit of glory (kleos) that will immortalise his name. The Iliad vividly portrays his near-divine ferocity, as seen in this excerpt:

"Then, like a god, Achilles leapt into the fray, his armour blazing as if with living fire...None could stand before him."

But Achilles is also deeply flawed. His rage, particularly after the death of his friend Patroclus, consumes him, leading to acts of brutality and a disregard for honourable conduct. His heroism is intensely personal, driven by pride and a thirst for vengeance.

Beowulf: The Selfless Protector

In contrast to Achilles, Beowulf embodies the ideal of the selfless hero. He fights not for personal glory, but for the protection of his people. Whether battling Grendel, Grendel's mother, or a fearsome dragon, Beowulf's actions are guided by duty and a commitment to the well-being of his kingdom. He is the epitome of a warrior-king, placing the needs of his community above his own.

Achilles' tale serves as a cautionary reminder of the destructive potential of unchecked ambition, while Beowulf's story celebrates the enduring importance of selfless service and the protection of one's community.
